Identifying Risks Before They Become Threats
Locked doors and metal detectors provide students with a last layer of security at a time when they need it the most. While hardening schools is an important component of school safety, it is not enough.
The U.S. Secret Service recommends that districts implement systems and processes that identify symptoms of threats and manage them before they manifest themselves as actual threats. A system needs to:
- Support the identification and the application of appropriate interventions to help at-risk students
- Enable a multi-disciplinary team to effectively collaborate on student supports
- Surface trends and enables reporting to authorities
- Offer reassurance that potential threats to your school community's safety are identified and reported early
